The present invention relates to a composition comprising a mangosteen extract or a xanthone-based compound separated from the mangosteen extract as an active ingredient for preventing or treating porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED). Inventors of the present invention identified that the mangosteen extract or α-mangostin, γ-mangostin, gartanin, deoxy gartanin, beta mangostin, 9-hydroxycalabaxanthone, and so on which are xanthone-based compounds derived from the mangosteen extract have anti-virus activity and a cytotoxicity effect by treating porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) with the mangosteen extract or α-mangostin, γ-mangostin, gartanin, deoxy gartanin, beta mangostin, 9-hydroxycalabaxanthone, and so on. The present invention has been completed based on the identification above. PED is highly contagious and causes economic loss, such as deaths of piglets, and also leads to property losses in farms, and an economic impact from the consumer pork prices. Accordingly, when the mangosteen extract or α-mangostin, γ-mangostin, gartanin, deoxy gartanin, beta mangostin, 9-hydroxycalabaxanthone, and so on which are xanthone-based compounds derived from the mangosteen extract are used, a user can take action for disease caused by PEDV in an effective manner.본 발명은 망고스틴 추출물 또는 이로부터 분리된 잔톤계 화합물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 돼지유행성 설사병(PED) 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것으로서, 본 발명자들은 망고스틴 추출물 또는 망고스틴 추출물로부터 유래한 잔톤계 화합물인 알파 망고스틴(α-mangostin), 감마 망고스틴(γ-mangostin), 가르타닌(gartanin), deoxygartanin, beta mangostin, 및 9-hydroxycalabaxanthone 등을 돼지유행성 설사 바이러스(PEDV)에 처리한 결과, 항바이러스 활성 및 세포독성 효과가 있다는 것을 확인하고, 이에 기초하여 본 발명을 완성하였다. 돼지유행성 설사병(PED)은 전염성이 강하여 자돈의 폐사라는 농장의 재산적 손실뿐만이 아니라, 이로 인해 돈육의 소비자 물가 상승이라는 경제적 파급효과까지 발생하고 있는 실정이므로, 따라서 본 발명에 따른 망고스틴 추출물 또는 망고스틴 추출물로부터 유래한 잔톤계 화합물인 알파 망고스틴(α-mangostin), 감마 망고스틴(γ-mangostin), 가르타닌(gartanin), deoxygartanin, beta mangostin, 및 9-hydroxycalabaxanthone 등을 이용하면 돼지유행성 설사 바이러스로 인한 질환에 대하여 보다 효과적으로 대응할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
