A population of human polygonal RPE cells is disclosed. At least 95% of the cells co-express the premelanoma protein (PMEL17) and the cell retinaldehyde binding protein (CRALBP), wherein the epithelial transit electrical resistance of the cell is greater than 100 ohm.
