Disclosed are indolyl-pyridone derivatives of formula (I) having checkpoint kinase 1 (CHK1) inhibitory activity, wherein the variables are as defined in the specification. These indolyl-pyridone derivative compounds are suitable for the treatment of conditions responsive to inhibition of CHK1 protein kinase activity selected from cancer and autoimmune disorders such as organ transplant rejection, lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
