The cell (10) has an input terminal (11) connected with an output terminal (14). A converter stage (100) comprises an upper series circuit (102) and a lower series circuit (104) with upper and lower circuit breakers e.g. insulated-gate bipolar transistors (130) and MOSFETs. A capacitor is provided in the converter stage such that the upper circuit breakers are connected with the lower circuit breakers of same atomic numbers by the capacitor. A direct current (DC) voltage source e.g. photovoltaic module, is connected to the input terminal or another two input terminals (12, 13). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a regenerative DC-DC converter circuit.
