Images of an object of interest are obtained using a system comprising an x-ray source facing a detector. The method comprises acquiring a plurality of 2D projection images of the object of interest in a plurality of orientations. At least one 3D volume portion of the object of interest is generated from the plurality of 2D projection images, wherein an impulse response of a point object is independent of the objects position in the vertical direction (z-axis) of the 3D volume portion. And at least one 3D volume portion is displayed. The 2D images may be used to generate intermediate tomosynthesis planes some of which may then be used to generate the 3D volume portion. The resolution of the 3d volume and/or the 3D volume portion thickness may be set to an average lesion size and may be higher than the resolution of the 2D projection images. The intermediate planes may be generated by high pass filtering followed by combining using a maximum intensity pixel(MIP) method.
