The present invention is concerned with dispersions of hydrophobic compounds and/or carbon nanomaterial, in particular carbon nanotubes (CNTs) such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and graphenes, comprising as a dispersing agent a copolymer comprising repeating units derived from ionic liquid (IL) monomer and repeating units derived from hydrophilic non-ionic vinyl monomer. According to further aspects, the present invention pertains to a method of dispersing hydrophobic compounds and/or carbon nanomaterial in a dispersion medium in the presence of such copolymers, the use of such copolymers for exfoliating carbon nanostructures, such as carbon nanotubes or graphene, as well as to specific copolymers per se. The dispersions of the invention, e.g. waterborne dispersions, are highly stable and can contain high concentrations of carbon nanomaterial and/or hydrophobic compounds.
