A row unit (12) of a planter machine (10) or other agricultural machine having ground engaging wheels (34, 36, 38, 40) is equipped with a rotation sensor (50, 58) to determine if and when a wheel (34, 36, 38, 40) stops rotating. An alert is issued by a monitor (56) to the operator so that corrective action can be taken. Further, means are provided to determine when the machine (10) is in used depositing an input versus turning at the end of the rows so that the rotation sensors (50, 58) to not generate an alert when the machine (10) is not in use delivering an input to the field.
