The present invention is methods and compositions for reducing and preventingthe excess accumulation of extracellular matrix in a tissue and/or organ or ata wound site using a combination of agents that inhibit TGF.beta., or usingagents that inhibit TGF.beta. in combination with agents that degrade excessaccumulated extracellular matrix. The compositions and methods of theinvention are used to treat conditions such as fibrotic diseases and scarringthat result from excess accumulation of extracellular matrix, impairing tissueor organ function or skin appearance in a suject.
