Endoskopisches Bildverarbeitungssystem enthaltend eine optische Digitalkamera, insbesondere mit großer Schärfentiefe, sowie Mittel, welche im Erfassungsbereich der optischen Digitalkamera eine Distanzinformation erzeugen, die zusammen mit der Bildinformation verarbeitet und dann detektiert und benutzt wird, um zusätzliche geometrische Daten betreffend den Bildinhalt zu erzeugen. Die Vermessungsinformation wird dabei gewonnen aus einer der Abbildung eines Hilfsinstruments, das als normales chirurgisches Instrument ausgebildet sein kann, wobei das Bild eines Teils des Hilfsinstruments aus dem Kamerabild extrahiert und als Bezugsgröße für den Abbildungsmaßstab dient. Auf dieser Grundlage wird dann eine geometrische Information maßstabsgerecht in festem Bezug zum Hilfsinstrument in das laufende Kamerabild als virtuelles Mess- oder Anzeigeelement eingefügt.
