The present invention describes an efficient method for separating sialic acid from fermentation media. The sialic acid contained in the fermentation broth is produced by bacterial fermentation. The method of the present invention includes the step of removing biomass from the fermentation medium, applying the resulting solution to one or more of cation exchanger treatment and anion exchanger treatment and removing salt after ion exchanger treatment.
