Sanitary towels, incontinence pads or napkins (diapers) are provided with leakage guards extending from the front to the rear of the pad on either side of the front to rear axis of the pad. Each of the guards or flaps includes a stem bonded to the main absorbent part 28, 70, 34, 68, 26 of the pad to extend away from the body facing surface of the pad in the crotch region when the pad is fitted (in the relaxed condition). Inner flaps 76, 78 and outer flaps 80, 82 extend laterally in opposite directions from the distal ends of the stem, each of the inner and outer flaps being “elasticated” by elastic strands 48, 50 extending along the flaps in the longitudinal direction of the flaps from a rear end to a front end of a central elasticated portion. Bonding the inner and outer flaps to the body facing liner and to the stem of the guard respectively in the front and rear regions of the pad between the front and rear edges of the pad and the front and rear ends of the elasticated portions of the flaps assists in assuring that the stems stand up from the body facing surface of the pad when the pad is worn. The guards are positioned inwardly of the outer longitudinal edges of the pad, which edges may be elasticated as well.
