A surgical instrument having a handle, elongate shaft, end effector and a rotatable thumbwheel 28 located on the handle. Rotation of the thumbwheel 28 causes corresponding rotation of the elongate shaft. The thumbwheel 28 has a stop member 1500 which interacts with shoulders 1502, 1504 on the handle to limit rotation of the thumbwheel 28 to a predetermined angular rotation. Rotation may also be limited by interacting sets of rotation control members such as protrusions on the handle and at longitudinally spaced locations along the elongate shaft.
