Nowadays, there are different groups of emerging diseases, of which viral infections represent a group of higher incidence. The Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2) are human pathogens causing recurrent infections of the nervous system located in lips, eyes, mucous membranes of the mouth and genitals. Due to the limitations in the current therapies for treating this type of infection, arises the need of a large search of new antiviral agents. The upper plants remain as a reservoir of chemical compounds with a great therapeutic potential as antiviral agents, amongst others. The present invention consists in a process for obtaining a hydroalcoholic extract of the Jatropha dioica plant with antiviral activity against Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2), as well as the claim of the use by topic application. The obtention of great potential antivirals from Mexican regional plants against the Herpes Simplex Virus, will be subsequently used for solving a problem of public health in the country.En la actualidad existen diferentes grupos de enfermedades emergentes, de los cuales las infecciones virales representan un grupo de estos con mayor incidencia. Los Virus Herpes Simplex tipo 1 (VHS-1) y Virus Herpes Simplex tipo 2 (VHS-2) son patógenos humanos que causan infecciones recurrentes del sistema nervioso localizadas en labios, ojos, membrana mucosa de la cavidad oral y en genitales. Debido a las limitaciones de las terapias actualmente disponibles para este tipo de infecciones, existe la necesidad de una extensa búsqueda de nuevos agentes antivirales. Las plantas superiores permanecen como un reservorio de compuestos químicos con gran potencial terapéutico como agentes antivirales entre otros.
