PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel fluorescent compound which can be used for imaging in various medical, biological and diagnostic applications by chemically binding to biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids and therapeutic small molecules, and is useful for imaging interested areas in a living body especially in mammals, and to provide an optical imaging method.SOLUTION: There are provided a fluorescent compound family represented by the general formula 1 and a salt thereof. Z1-PMB-Z2 (1), where Z1 and Z2 are each independently a polycyclic group containing a heterocyclic part and PMB is a polymethine crosslink containing a crosslinked polycyclo part.
