Carbon monoxide or a carbon monoxide donor of the present invention increases an expression of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and sestrin2 by a signal transmitting path of PERK (ER stress sensor) to alleviate obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases, and to enhance a memory recognition ability by reducing an expression of beta-secretase 1 (BACE1) from dementia animal models and a secretion of amyloid &beta40 and amyloid &beta42.
