Methods are provided for enhancing transfection efficiency of bone marrowcells by transfecting early attaching cells derived from bone marrow inculture. Methods are also provided for utilizing such early attaching cellsderived from autologous bone marrow to deliver angiogenesis-promotingtransgenes to a patient. The transfected early attaching cells are introducedinto an ischemic tissue, such as the heart, to enhance formation of collateralblood vessels. Methods are also provided for treating ischemic muscle by co-administration of autologous bone marrow cells and RGTA, for example RGTA11.
