A surgical access apparatus has a body including a proximal portion, a distalportion, anda liner interconnecting the proximal portion and the distal portion. Theproximal portion and thedistal portion are longitudinally movable relative to each other. A holder isreleasably attachedto the body for holding the body in a first state, in which the proximalportion and the distalportion are a first distance apart. Removing the holder from the body allowsthe body totransition to a second state, in which the proximal portion and the distalportion are a seconddistance apart. The second distance is greater than the first distance. Atleast one port extendsthrough the proximal portion and is adapted for the reception of an object.Compressiblematerial defining the at least one port is adapted to deform to establish asubstantial sealedrelation with the object.
