The present invention relates to a process for producing a low endotoxin alkali chitosan, chitin, chitosan derivative or chitin derivative, and also to a process for producing low endotoxin neutral chitosan, chitosan salt and chitosan derivatives, and to the products of such processes. The process comprises contacting chitosan, chitin, chitosan derivative or chitin derivative with an alkali solution having a concentration of less than 0.25M to form a mixture leaving the mixture for a period of less than 12 hours and optionally drying the mixture. The low endotoxin alkali chitosan may be used in the manufacture of other useful chitosan based products.La présente invention porte sur un procédé pour la production dune chitine, dun chitosane alcalin(e) à faible teneur en endotoxines ou dun dérivé de chitine ou de chitosane correspondant, ainsi quun procédé pour la production de chitosane neutre à faible teneur en endotoxines, dun sel de chitosane correspondant et de dérivés de chitosane correspondants, et sur les produits de ces procédés.. Ce procédé consiste à mettre en contact du chitosane, de la chitine, un dérivé de chitosane ou un dérivé de chitine avec une solution alcaline ayant une concentration inférieure à 0,25M pour former un mélange, à laisser reposer le mélange pendant une période de moins de 12 heures et éventuellement à faire sécher le mélange. Le chitosane alcalin à faible teneur en endotoxines peut être utilisé dans la fabrication dautres produits à base de chitosane utiles.
