A method for measuring the effect of a medical treatment on the size of lips. The method has the following steps: (a) providing a scale of at least four visual reference images exhibiting varying lip sizes and assigning a unique indicator to each of the at least four visual reference images (b) visually examining a lip of a human subject to be augmented and selecting one from among of at least four different reference images most closely corresponding in lip size and identifying the corresponding unique indicator (c) introducing into the lip of the human subject a filler or an implant to augment the size of the lip (d) visually examining the lip after introduction of the filler or the implant and selecting one of the at least four different reference images most closely corresponding in lip size and identifying the corresponding unique indicator and (e) comparing the unique indicator of the lip before introduction of the filler or the implant and the unique indicator of the lip after introduction of the filler or the implant to determine if they are different. There is also a method for counseling a human subject undertaking augmentation of lips. There is also a method for developing a scale for measuring differences in lip size in human subjects.
