The absorbent article comprises an absorbent composite comprising a non-regenerated carboxyalkylcellulose fiber that is substantially water insoluble and water swellable. The fiber has a surface having the appearance of the surface of the cellulose fiber, and includes crosslinking in a plurality of second fibers selected from polyvalent metal ion crosslinking in the first fibers and ether crosslinking or ester crosslinking.
