An electrosurgical probe 1 for coagulating tissue, the probe having one or more side ports 13 and also a non-conducting member 3 including one or more gas channels, one gas channel leading to each of the one or more side ports 13. The probe also has one or more electrodes 7, the electrodes 7 including an elongate portion forming a side wall of its associated gas channel. Each of the one or more gas channels may extend into an associated chamber 15, where the side port 13 associated with that gas channel forms an exit from that chamber 15. The electrodes 7 may extend from a single cylindrical base portion 6, where each of the electrodes 7 is a finger projecting from the base portion 6, each finger terminating in a pointed tip. The non-conducting member 3 may include one or more recesses 11, so that the one or more electrodes 7 are received therein and where the one or more gas channels are created between the one or more electrodes 7 and the non conducting member 3. Described as a side effect instrument, where an ionised gas exits the instrument though an aperture in the side of the instrument.
