PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography device suitable to ophthalmic diagnoses which improves the measured thickness variations due to the existence of swellings or different measuring positions or minimizes increased measurement errors in the thickness as the optic nerve fibers become thinner in the measurement of the fundus optic nerve fiber thickness.
SOLUTION: Light from a light source 2 is polarized directly by a light polarizer 3. This polarization is continuously modulated by an EO modulator 4 in synchronization with B scanning. This continuously modulated beam is used in the B scanning of a sample 17 (a subject), double refractive by a galvanomirror 16. A spectral analysis is made with the diffraction grating 19 of a spectroscope 8 on the beam where the reference light has overlapped with the object light from the sample arm 7. Among the spectral interference components, the vertical and horizontal polarization components are concurrently detected with two line CCD cameras 22, 23 to obtain the Jones vector that represents the polarization characteristics of the sample 17.
