1. A hydrogel formed by the reaction of hyaluronic acid having 1-10% hydroxyl groups derivatized by reaction with divinyl sulfone (2- (vinylsulfonyl) ethoxy) hyaluronic acid), with a thiol crosslinking reagent having from two to eight thiol groups. 2. The hydrogel according to claim 1, where the hyaluronic acid has a degree of conversion of hydroxyl groups to 2- (vinylsulfonyl) ethoxy groups selected from 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 6%, 7%, 8%, 9 % and 10%. 3. The hydrogel according to claim 2, wherein the hyaluronic acid has a conversion of hydroxyl groups into 2- (vinylsulfonyl) ethoxy groups of about 4-5% per repeating unit of the disaccharide. A hydrogel according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the hyaluronic acid has a number average molecular weight in the range of 700 to 3 million Daltons. The hydrogel according to claim 1, wherein the thiol crosslinking reagent has a number of thiol groups selected from 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.6. The hydrogel according to claim 5, wherein the thiol crosslinking reagent is polyethylene glycol functionalized with thiol. The hydrogel of claim 6, wherein the thiol functionalized polyethylene glycol has a molecular weight in the range of from about 250 to about 20,000 Daltons. The hydrogel according to claim 7, wherein the thiol functionalized polyethylene glycol is polyethylene glycol dithiol (PEG dithiol). The hydrogel according to claim 6, wherein the thiol functionalized polyethylene glycol has a polyol core selected from glycerol, glycerol dimer (3,3'-hydroxydipropane-1,2-diol) trimethylolpropane, sorbitol, pentaerythritol and hexaglycerol. The hydrogel according to claim 9, wherein the thiol functionalized polyethylene glycol is a four-unit and has a pentaerythic core.
