A method for controlling, maintaining, or lowering blood pressure and / or for treating, preventing, or alleviating symptoms (eg, dyspnea) in a patient suffering from or prone to acute heart failure. The method includes administration of an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition containing a short-acting dihydropyridine compound (eg, clevidipine). The pharmaceutical composition can be administered in the initial dose and is intended if the blood pressure is not controlled or maintained within the target blood pressure range or if the blood pressure does not fall within the target blood pressure range. In order to obtain a blood pressure within the blood pressure range, the initial dose can be set.
