Some people to have postural problems due to peculiarities with their anatomy, for example spinal problems related to lordosis, kyphosis or scoliosis. Depending on the severity of the problem it may be necessary to have a seat customised to the shape of the person’s back so that they are comfortably supported when sitting. It is an object of preferred embodiments of the invention to go at least some way towards addressing this problem. It may be done so by way of a wheelchair backrest 2 comprising an upright base 4, a plurality of cushions 6, each cushion comprising a flexible envelope and fill comprising a plurality of pads. The backrest is such that the envelope of each cushion has a front face 8 formed or substantially covered with a connective hook receptive fabric, and a rear major face comprising a complimentary hooked patches. The backrest is built outwards by layering some of the cushions 6 so that the depth of the backrest varies commensurate with the shape of the user’s back. The layered cushions are at least partially held in place by engagement between the hook receptive fabric and the hooked patches.
