Disclosed herein is the use of fipronil for increasing the crop yield of wheat which is growing in soil which is supplied with less than 70%, particularly less than 50%, of standard nitrogen fertilization, relative to the total need for nitrogen of the specific crop, where the crop yield is increased in the presence or absence of insect pest pressure. Also disclosed is a method for increasing the crop yield of wheat which is growing in soil which is supplied with less than 70%, particularly less than 50%, of standard nitrogen fertilization, relative to the total need for nitrogen of the specific crop, which method comprises treating the plan propagules from which the wheat plant is to grow with fipronil, where the crop yield is increased in the presence or absence of insect pest pressure.
