A distal section of a hollow needle (25) is processed in order to remove a part of the needle wall, so that a wall segment (24) of the distal end (16) forms the irrigation cannula (14). A distal section of the wall segment (24) is heated to above the melting temperature. A thickening (23) is formed from the melted material so that the thickening (23) forms the distal end (16) of the irrigation cannula (14). The invention also relates to a corresponding irrigation cannula (14). The irrigation cannula is suitable for irrigating deep lying sections of a root canal of a tooth (26).
