A method of inhibiting histamine-related pathways in companion animals, comprising administering to a companion animal in need thereof a food composition containing an effective amount of lipoic acid to inhibit histamine-related pathways in companion animals, where the above is effective the amount of lipoic acid to inhibit histamine-related pathways in companion animals is at least about 25 ppm. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the effective amount is at least about 50 ppm. The method of claim 1, wherein the effective amount is at least about 100 ppm. The method of claim 1, wherein the effective amount is from about 100 ppm. up to approximately 600 ppm. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the effective amount is from about 100 ppm. up to approximately 200 ppm. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the companion animal is a dog. The method of claim 1, wherein the companion animal is a cat. The method of claim 1, wherein the effective amount is effective for treating or preventing idiopathic cystitis or interstitial cystitis in companion animals. The method of claim 1, wherein the food composition for a companion animal containing lipoic acid is administered for at least 15 days. The method of claim 1, wherein the food composition for a companion animal containing lipoic acid is administered for at least 30 days. The method of claim 1, wherein the food composition for a companion animal containing lipoic acid is administered for at least 45 days.
