A portable cart for containing medical waste in a bag includes a mobile base, a frame attached to said base that is located above said base, said frame having an outer surface and an opening and being adapted to removably mount the bag, a sensor mounted to the frame that detects if metal is passed through the frame opening and that asserts a sensor signal when metal is passed through the frame opening, a reader mounted to said frame and configured to detect if RFID-tagged objects pass by the reader and to assert a reader signal when RFID-tagged objects pass by the reader, and a processor configured to receive the sensor signal and, in response, said processor is configured to actuate a metal detection alarm, wherein the processor is further configured to receive the reader signal and, in response, actuate an RFID detection alarm.
