A system for detecting abnormal tissue in a patient includes an inserter cannula having a base opening and a distal opening. The system further includes a surgical instrument configured to be selectively inserted through the cannula. The surgical instrument further comprises a tissue cutting aperture disposed against the distal opening of the inserter cannula when fully inserted through the inserter cannula. The system also includes a sensor configured to detect at least one characteristic of the tissue of the patient.
