PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for providing control or relief of postoperative pain to a patient without medically significant degree of paralysis. SOLUTION: A partial or local anesthetic is first applied to an area of a patient during a surgical or dental procedure, near the completion of a surgical or dental procedure, or immediately after a surgical or dental procedure. Controlling or relieving pain in a dosed or contained area with a bicarbonate-containing pasta or ointment for a period of time following a surgical or dental procedure without a medically significant degree of paralysis. Is administered locally in an amount sufficient to provide to the patient. The composition may further include a calcium salt.
