The present invention relates to a method for determining the biological activity or therapeutic effect of cultured mesenchymal precursor cells or stem cells based on the level of TGF-9 released from the culture medium. The present invention also relates to an isolated population of mesenchymal precursor cells or stem cells selected based on the level of TGF-9 released by the cells in the culture medium.
