To position a probe appropriately with respect to a living body in ultrasonic diagnosis, or in concrete and to position a scanning surface appropriately with respect to the blood vessel.
SOLUTION: An irradiation direction in a living body of a continuous wave Doppler beam is changed to search for a specific beam direction going through the center of a blood vessel ON the basis of a continuous wave Doppler waveform. Next, a pulse Doppler beam is formed ON the specific beam direction and, by scanning a sample gate and specific depth causing maximal velocity of a flowing fluid. Then, in a B mode, a scanning surface is rotated with the specific beam direction as a rotation axis, and in so doing and a proper angle of rotation is determined according to area conversion of a blood flow cross section area. Identification of the blood flow cross section area is defined as an area including a reference point determined by the specific beam direction and specific depth.
