A retractable tube 8 for use in a respiratory apparatus for delivering a pressurized flow of breathable gas to a patient has the following properties: internal diameter <= 30 mm weight per unit length <= 500 g/m unextended length <= 2 m. The tube includes a portion 6 that is extensible in a range of 40% to 100% of its unextended length in response to a force applied to the tube. The extensible portion is configured to return the tube to its unextended length in the absence of force, or reduced force, applied to the tube. The retractable tube has a spring constant of 25 N/m or less.
