The present invention relates to an apparatus for animals, especially to an apparatus for containing an animal or to an apparatus for weighing and identifying an animal. The present invention also relates to methods of using the apparatus. The apparatus may include at least two sidewalls adapted to contain an animal therebetween, and an animal entrance above the sidewalls. The apparatus may include a system for moving at least one of said sidewalls from an animal containment position to an animal release position. The apparatus may include a weight detector for detecting the weight of an animal in the apparatus. The apparatus may include an animal identifier for identifying the animal in the apparatus.
