A method for growing shellfish is disclosed. This method comprises a support tray (1) with a recess (7), wherein at least some of the recesses (7) are intentionally formed with alphanumeric, letter or pictorial marks as the shell grows. Obtaining a support tray (1) incorporating means adapted to occur in the shellfish. Scallops are attached to at least some of the recesses (7) and the tray (1) is placed in water so that the scallops grow into substantially mature shells in the recesses (7).
