The load bearing structure for a verandah or a conservatory is mounted on vertical supports (1) which are rigidly attached to the foundation. The load bearing structure is formed from sections (2) made of thermally insulating material. These sections (2) are provided with grooves to drain away rain water or condensation. The sections (2) are reinforced with hollow steel sections (3) and a second section (4), made of thermally insulating material, is fitted between the vertical supports (1) and the horizontal load bearing sections (2).
