PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve real-time display of a stable fly-through image using time-series volume data.
SOLUTION: A viewpoint plane setting section 34 sets a viewpoint plane on the basis of a viewpoint and the line-of-sight direction which are used for generating fly-through image data of a prior time phase so that the viewpoint plane contains the viewpoint and is perpendicular to the line-of-sight direction. A viewpoint position determination section 35 then generates two-dimensional profile data on the basis of an intersection line between the profile of a luminal organ and the viewpoint plane within volume data of a next time phase successing the prior time phase, and determines the position of the viewpoint relative to the profile data. When the viewpoint is located outside the profile data, a luminal center detection section 36 detects the central position of the profile data. At the same time, a fly-through image data generation section 33 generates fly-through image data of the next time phase by subjecting the volume data of the next time phase to image processing using information of the viewpoint and line-of-sight direction updated by a viewpoint/line-of-sight direction setting section 32 on the basis of the information of the central position.
