Disclosed is a composition comprising synthetic deoxycholic acid (DCA) represented by the structural formula depicted herein, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt (preferably a sodium salt) thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein said composition is free of cholic acid, and wherein the synthetic DCA comprises a synthetic side chain of formula: -CH(CH3)C2H4COOH.Said composition may additionally comprise (a) a lipid, a phospholipid, or a phosphatidylcholine； (b) at least one additional active ingredient selected from the group consisting of: anti-microbial agents, vasoconstrictors, anti-thrombotic agents, anti-coagulation agents, suds-depressants, anti-inflammatory agents, analgesics, dispersion agents, antidispersion agents, penetration enhancers, steroids, tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, and anti-diarrhea agents；(c) one or more detergents； and (d) at least one additional active ingredient selected from the group consisting of a neuropeptide Y (NPY) receptor antagonist and a fat selective pro-apoptotic peptide.
