PURPOSE: Melatonin and a composition containing the same are provided to selectively suppress neurotoxin caused by prion without an effect on cell survival rate and to be used in pharmaceutical products and foods which effectively prevent or treat prion disease. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating prion disease contains melatonin as an active ingredient. The prion disease is selected among: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Kuru disease, Gerstmann-Strsyndrome, and fatal familial insomnia in humans； bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle； scrapie in sheep； chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer； and transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) in mink. A food composition for preventing or treating prion disease contains melatonin.본 발명은 멜라토닌을 유효성분으로 포함하는 프리온 질병 예방 및 치료용 약학적 조성물 및 식품 조성물에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따르면 멜라토닌은 세포의 생존율에는 영향을 미치지 아니하며, 프리온으로 유발된 신경독소를 선택적으로 억제하는 바, 이를 포함하는 조성물은 프리온 질병 예방 또는 치료에 효과적인 의약품과 식품으로 유용하게 이용할 수 있다.
