A solid solution for use in bone regeneration. The solid solution includes two divalent cations, wherein a first divalent cation is calcium ion (Ca2+) and a second divalent cation is selected from the group consisting of magnesium ion (Mg2+), zinc ion (Zn2+), barium ion (Ba2+) and strontium ion (Sr2+). The solid solution also includes at least one anion, and the at least one anion comprises one or more of sulfate (SO42−), phosphate (PO42−), carbonate (CO32−), and silicate (SiO32−).
