The drug injection device (10) is a syringe (12) having a barrel having an open end and an axially movable stopper (18) received in the barrel, the stopper being axially forward of the stopper. A syringe (12) is provided that isolates the first chamber from the second chamber axially rearward of the stopper. The drug injection device is an expandable drive housing (24) configured to receive a propellant from a propellant source (36) to provide vapor pressure and is in fluid communication with the second chamber. It further comprises an expandable drive housing (24) having a narrow passage. The expandable drive housing is expandable upon receipt of a propellant from a propellant source and is adapted to cause axial forward movement of the syringe upon expansion. Propellant directed into the expandable housing enters the second chamber through the narrow passage and causes the axial forward movement of the stopper within the barrel to open the drug contained in the first chamber.
