598667 Disclosed is an expanded polystyrene molded article prepared from a method comprising: contacting expandable polystyrene with imidacloprid in a concentration sufficient to coat the expandable polystyrene when expanded mixing the imidacloprid with the expandable polystyrene to form a mixture exposing the mixture to conditions such that the polystyrene beads expand to form a coated expanded polystyrene without being impregnated and preparing a molded article from the coated expanded polystyrene. Further disclosed is a method for producing an expanded polystyrene foam comprising: an expanded polystyrene formed from the expansion of expandable polystyrene beads having an outer surface and imidacloprid in the amount of from 0.01 wt/vol.% (lbs/ft3) to less than 1.0 wt/vol.% (lbs/ft3) of the expanded polystyrene, said imidacloprid being operably bound and substantially coating the outer surface of the expanded polystyrene without being impregnated within the expandable polystyrene beads, said expanded polystyrene composition providing upon molding thereof a 0% termite survival rate as determined according to the Standard EI-97 Two Choice Test, wherein said production method comprises the steps of (1) contacting provided expandable polystyrene with imidacloprid in its powder form in a concentration sufficient to coat an outer surface of the expandable polystyrene when expanded (2) contacting via mixing the imidacloprid with the expandable polystyrene to form a mixture and (3) exposing the mixture to conditions such that the polystyrene expands to form a coated expanded polystyrene, wherein said imidacloprid is operably bound through electrostatic interactions to and substantially coating the outer surface of the expanded polystyrene.
