PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for rapidly inducing a protective immune response in an animal including human, comprising the step of administering to the animal including human a pox virus not capable of replicating in the animal including human.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a rapid induction of a protective immune response against a poxvirus and poxvirus infection such as smallpox by vaccinating an animal including human with a replication deficit poxvirus in the animal. An example of such a poxvirus is a Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA).
