A living area, which comprises a lying and eating area and a milking area, is connected to a separation area by means of a selection device. A subgroup of dairy animals to be separated is determined as well as an end time at which it is desired that the dairy animals to be separated are located in the separation area. An individual separation period is determined for each individual dairy animal from the subgroup to be separated separately, which runs from an individually determined start time to the end time. A dairy animal that has walked to the selection device is led through the selection device to the separation area if that dairy animal belongs to the subgroup of dairy animals to be separated and that dairy animal is at the selection device in the individual separation period determined for that dairy animal. Activity of each dairy animal from the group of dairy animals is observed by means of a observation system while that dairy animal is in the lying and eating area.
