A method of transplanting cells of an internal organ to a subject having an internal organ in a damaged or dysfunctional state, comprising: a. obtaining normal cells of the internal organ of the donor; b. combining cells with one or more gel-forming biomaterials to form a mixture; c. if necessary, combining the mixture with a growth medium, signaling molecules, extracellular matrix proteins, or a combination thereof; d. administering the mixture according to (b) to a subject in which the majority of the cells introduced according to (d) are located in or on at least a portion of an internal organ in vivo. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the normal cells are stem cells, committed progenitor cells, or mature cells. The method of claim 1, wherein the internal organ is a liver, lungs, intestine, intestines, heart, kidneys, bile ducts, thyroid gland, thymus, brain, or pancreas. The method of claim 3, wherein the internal organ is a liver.
