One system includes polarization beam-splitter and aquarter-waveplate, wherein the quarter-wave plate is configured to circularly rotate a laser beam received from a laser that is transmitted and passes through the polarization beamn-splitter, and to transform acircularly rotated back-reflected beam to alinearly polarized laserbeam that is perpendicularto the beam that wastIransmitted through the polarization beam-splitter. Substantially all ofthe back-reflected beam is directed to aphotodetector for analysis. A Faraday rotator subsystem may be substituted for a polarization beamsplitter. An optical system including alaser that generates alaser beam ofa first wavelength for therapeutic treatment, and another laser that genemtes a laser beam of a second wavelength for measurment is also disclosed.
