A method for producing snack product pieces having a random curvature and a bulk density, by feeding snack product pre-forms (120) into a fryer having fryer oil(104) submerging for a pre-determined time in said fryer oil said snack product pre-forms using a contoured submerger (512) as described herein having at least two contours wherein each contour (516) has a cross-sectional shape, a contour height (530), and a contour spacing (518) giving a random curvature to said snack product pre-forms using said contoured submerger frying the snack product pre-forms as obtained in step (c) to a desired moisture content in at least two submerged layers to form snack product pieces wherein said pieces maintain said random curvature and removing the snack product pieces as obtained in step (d) from said fryer to obtain the snack product pieces having a random curvature and a bulk density.
