The method involves providing a data volume with datasets to a memory of a base station, where each dataset in the memory of the base station has a parameter assigned to a cordless dental hand piece (1) and/or a treatment tool e.g. dental file. Some of the datasets are selected from the data volume in the memory of the base station, and the selected datasets are transmitted from the memory of the base station to a memory (20) of the hand piece for updating the memory of the hand piece. The dataset is selected from the updated memory of the hand piece for operation of the hand piece. An independent claim is also included for a device for programming a cordless dental hand piece comprising a memory separated from a memory of a cordless dental hand piece.
