Compositions and methods for the treatment of side effects associated with the administration of chemotherapeutic agents for cancer include the ingestion of delayed release capsules comprising adenine and orotic acid. Protein pump inhibitors reduce systemic absorption of orotic acid, and administration of allopurinol reduces the formation of 2,8-dihydroxyadenine from adenine. In an alternative embodiment, the cationic liposome comprises a purine / pyrimidine precursor. Cationic liposomes bind to cells that cover the mucosa of the intestinal tract, and then the content of the cationic liposomes is taken inside the cells to prevent metabolism of the cancer therapeutic drug 5-FU into toxic species.
